The trend toward multicultural understanding has made an impact in Asian literature in the past decade. With the expanded interest in cultural perspectives has come an increase in literature specific to intercultural and familial relationships. The relationship between mother and daughter has always been considered as complex and compelling and the relationship between a mother born in another country and a daughter born in the United States has special interest in this day and age. This 8 page paper examines the relationships between the women in The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan and The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston as defined by the cultural representation of language and the use of language to bridge the gap between the Chinese world and the American.
